Portland Family Fun Guide: Local farm tours

Farm Tours (Portland Metro)

Every summer my family looks forward to visiting several of the hundreds of local farms across the Portland Metro area. It’s an inexpensive way to spend the day with our kids picking fresh produce, touring a working farm, and participating in events.

For years, we’ve taken our two kids, now ages 2 and 5, to pick pounds of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries for use in jams, smoothies and baked goods year round. It’s saved us hundreds of dollars over organic berries purchased from the store.  We also like to pick up farm fresh, organic eggs and grass-fed meat.

We recently toured Full of Life Farm in Champoeg learning how the animals are raised and cared for, what they eat and seeing right where they are pastured. This helps us understand a little more about our environment and the foods we are feeding our family. We’ve also toured through Luscher Farm outside of Lake Oswego and Kruger’s Farm on Sauvie Island.

Throughout the year, we’ve participated in many farm events. We’ve hunted Easter eggs, eaten strawberry shortcake on Father’s Day weekend, crawled through hay bale mazes and searched for Christmas trees while sipping hot chocolate. Many of these events have been free while we ran around the farm, often bringing home whatever had been harvested that morning.
