My husband and I have wildly different reading personalities. I am a paper book-loving, post-it note-using, note-taking, stay up late until my eyes fall out of my sockets reader who loves everything from children’s fiction to biographies to business books. He LISTENS to self-help and business books because reading actual books makes him fall asleep with the book plastered across his face.
But he LISTENS to books. He doesn’t hold them in his hands. And I’m coming to realize that while there are many like me who love the feel of an actual book in their hand, there are SO many of you who like to read on a device because of the convenience or listen to a book because you can do two things at once (ie wash dishes and read or you know, drive to work and read).
We get the majority of our books from the library (audio and paper) and while this is such an amazing (and inexpensive) option (not free because we always have a fine or two #weareonlyhuman).
BUT the downfall is that sometimes we have to wait for books that we are really looking forward to reading or they don’t always have the titles we are looking for. Audiobooks can be even trickier, as the library just doesn’t carry every option that is out there, so we are limited to what they carry.
My husband recently signed up for a reading subscription service called Scribd and went nuts right out of the gate saving ALL THE BOOKS and was super excited about it, so I figured I would check it out.
His review:
“It has every single book on my list and I’m saving them all.”
Wordy fella, no?
My review:
I LOVE that as soon as you sign up, you choose the categories you are most interested in and Scribd immediately starts with their top recommendations in those categories. I found books that have been on my list for ages and some I’ve forgotten I wanted to read. Not only do they share the top picks in your categories, but gives you the top pick for the day and best sellers across multiple categories.
Favorite features:
- SO easy to use – Very simple layout, no learning curve
- Save the books or audiobooks that you want to read in the future in an easily accessible folder
- While reading or listening, bookmark a page you want to come back to (this is HUGE for me as I’m an incessant note taker and even keep a journal with my favorite passages from books)
- Listen or read on your phone or tablet, but also accessible on desktop for easier navigation
- While reading, you can quickly change the font, font size, background color. Whatever you need to make it easier on your eyes for reading.
- Upload titles and read offline (perfect for when you don’t want to use up your data on a trip or will be traveling outside of a service area)
- App is available on both Android or iOS
Additional (and amazing) features:
Choose from TONS of magazine publications that you can browse instantly by layout or individual article. Popular titles like People, Bloomberg, TIME, Entertainment, Women’s Health and much more.
You can access The New York Times! I didn’t find this feature directly on the home page but just typed in New York Times in the search bar and it popped up with TONS of resources. This is such a great feature as you can only read a certain number of articles with the Times before having to pay through their website. Through Scribd, it looks like you have access to as much as you want!
One last thing that jumped out at me is the ability to find sheet music for tons of popular and well-known artists. Full albums or individual songs! This is such a cool feature.
Even though I mentioned not being much of an audiobook girl, I will make an exception for Chip and Jo and Lauren Graham. Because, Gilmore Girls. And Fixer Upper.
