A Frugal Day in Hillsboro
Or, an ode to Cornell Road……There are some little known, inexpensive gems in Hillsboro. Many of them are off Cornell Road. One such place is a little (I’m talking LITTLE – 2 or 3 planes that they are working on little) air museum called Classic Aircraft Aviation Museum Inc. It is right next to the Hillsboro Airport on the FAR west side of the group of buildings. Look for this sign:
This is a great place to start your day especially with boys. There are a couple cool artifacts such as a jump seat from an old war plane. Be careful if you sit in it. I barely got out! They also work on planes there. When we went they let my son sit on the wing of the plane, no joke! Best day ever. If you go with friends, call ahead so they are ready for you.
You can also take a look around at tons of military vehicles & other planes. Boy paradise.
Next travel East on Cornell down to Cornelius Pass Road. Stop at the Sonic on Butler between 2-4 pm for Happy Hour for 1/2 price drinks (or anytime when you order ahead with the app). With stalls to park & eat in or outdoor seating, it’s lots of fun for the kids to order their own goodies.
I highly recommend root beer with vanilla & cherry add in. My kids suggest vanilla Dr. Pepper or chocolate Coke.
Now the kids are on a sugar high so off to the park! I have happened to trip over several parks that are hidden in Hillsboro neighborhoods and I have to say, their equipment is amazing. Really different things to climb & swing on/across/over. There’s a great list here.
One of my favorite spots is Magnolia Park. You can access it from Cornell. It has covered picnic areas with lots of tables and you can reserve these picnic areas. There are 2 play areas – an older with “way cool” slides and a “tot lot” type for youngsters. My 18 month old had a blast.
In summer months there is a zero depth fountain for all ages to enjoy.
The Hillsboro area is full of gems like these that make being frugal still fun for the kids.
