It was an eventful weekend at the Davis house — I (finally) had my baby!
I woke up on Friday morning to contractions that came every 20-40 minutes. After quickly figuring out that the baby wasn’t going to come out that morning, we decided to go out to breakfast for one last Davis 6 outing.
The three-contractions-an-hour-game continued, to my great annoyance, until about 4:00 in the afternoon when all of a sudden the contractions sped up to every four minutes. Will called my midwife and told her to come and he and Audrey started setting up the birth tub while I walked through the apartment contracting.
The birth tub set-up took about 45 minutes (I took the pictures in between contractions — I’m a blogger. That’s what we do :)):
Laying the painter’s plastic on the carpet.
My daughter, Audrey, helped with everything. I’ve never seen that girl so excited to work.
Will couldn’t figure out how to blow up the inside portions with the pump, so he used his mouth.
Matthew woke up from his nap during the set-up. His brothers spent the entire time playing on the computer, but Matthew was in the room for most of the birth.
At about 5:15, my midwife and her assistant arrived. My midwife checked me, got a goofy smile on her face and declared, “You’re ready to push!” I almost dove into the tub.
After getting situated in the tub, I started pushing. To everyone’s surprise, the baby’s head came out with my first real attempt. I had no idea she was right there and my midwife certainly was not ready. She said, “Oh, I should get my gloves on…” and then dove her hands into the pool to catch her as I was pushing her body out (I was not interested in waiting for anyone or anything at that moment). As she was going in, she yelled, “Good thing you guys don’t have any diseases!”
The baby was a bit tangled in the cord, but started crying right away. She was born at 6:05 pm on Friday, about two hours after calling my midwife and getting the party started! Before any of you first-time mamas get any ideas, remember, this was my fifth birth. My first couple of births were pure agony getting the baby out. I’ve earned this one.
It’s over! The moments after giving birth are quite possibly the best moments of my life. Complete relief.
Audrey (8) with her new sister.
Willy (6), so thrilled to have a new baby in the house.
Matthew (2), just digesting that “the baby sista” was no longer in my stomach, but was now a real live baby.
I still don’t have a picture with Nathan (4) and his sister. Unless we figure out how to attach a screen to her chest, he won’t be having much to do with her. Stinker.
Let me introduce our sweet baby girl, Lucy Kathleen Kyler Davis!

After my 2 painful births I wholly agree- you’ve earned an easy one! Beautiful family!
I’ve been checking all weekend for this post waiting to see a picture of a beautiful baby girl. How exciting! I have a Lucy, too, only she’s 12. Someone once told me that if your name is Lucy you will undoubtedly be “spirited” – it comes with the name. I figure that’s the best kind of girl.
