Farmers' Market Tips & Tricks Many of the Portland/Vancouver area farmer's markets open up soon. Enjoy these tips. Our local farmer's market kicks off its season in the beginning of May! Looking for one near you? Go here. We love wandering through outdoor markets and buying our food directly from the people who grow it. Whether it's listening to the local bands, watching strangers and bumping into friends, checking out the bins of beautiful produce, or just enjoying the way my husband's eyes light up when crenshaw melons are in season, I love everything about small, local farmer's markets. Okay, not everything. Some of those music groups can Keep Reading
Portland Family Fun Guide: Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden
Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden (SE Portland) Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, located in the Eastmoreland neighborhood of SE Portland, is one of the many ways Portlanders can find paradise in the heart of the city. Nestled in the southeast, a stone’s throw from Reed College, this 9.5-acre haven for multiple varieties of waterfowl attracts families with kids of all ages. Bring your camera to capture your children’s wide eyes when the geese step right up, hoping you’ll ignore the garden’s request that you not feed them. There are signs to help you identify the fowl swimming on Crystal Springs Lake. According to one of the brochures Keep Reading
Portland Family Fun Guide: Hoyt Arboretum
Hoyt Arboretum (Portland) When most people think of Northwest Portland family outings they picture the Portland Zoo, the Portland Children’s Museum or maybe the World Forestry Center. Some people may not even know that the perfect and free family outing is only steps away! We recently visited the Hoyt Arboretum for the first time and had a fabulous morning. If you are not familiar with this area, the Arboretum is located about two miles west of Downtown Portland. Our first stop was to get a map from the visitors’ center. The little ones absolutely loved having a map. They would frequently pause to look at it, trace their finger along Keep Reading
Portland Family Fun Guide: Springwater Corridor — Sellwood to OMSI
Springwater Corridor: Sellwood to OMSI (SE Portland) My kids don’t seem to grasp the notion that they are only allowed to get cabin fever in the summer, when there’s no end of opportunities to work out the wiggles on playgrounds, in parks and at the pool. Fortunately, they love to ride bikes, but our neighborhood street isn’t the sort of place I really want them to go for a spin, so I’m glad we’ve discovered a protected bike path that makes an easy half-day adventure for our little family on any decent day, even in mid-winter. The Springwater Corridor is part of a massive loop of bike paths circumnavigating the eastern half of the Portland Keep Reading
How you can help Coast Guard units in Oregon affected by the federal shutdown
How to help Coast Guard units in Oregon Unless you've been hiding under a rock, you know that the ramifications to people affected by the partial government shutdown are beginning to grow. One group that is affected is the United States Coast Guard. Many members of the Coast Guard are obligated to serve even without pay and that is the position they are in right now. This means that a good number of families stationed in the 11 units on the Oregon Coast and on Swan Island in Portland did not receive their paychecks this week but are still working on our behalf. These are families that are typically stationed far away from their own support Keep Reading
Ten for Teens 2018: Give a gift card to a local teen in foster care this Christmas
Ten for Teens 2018 Six years ago, Frugal Living NW featured Welcome Boxes for children entering foster care as an opportunity for all of you to give back to our community. The drive was a raving success as the community showed how much it values vulnerable children in the Portland Metro area. These boxes communicated a much needed message of value, dignity, and worth at a time of great vulnerability and uncertainty in these children's lives. And now we have another opportunity to serve this Christmas season. We're back again this year with our big Ten for Teens giving opportunity! Over the last five years, Frugal Living NW readers have Keep Reading
