Pumpkin Spice Scones (Starbucks Copycat) Back in the old days, when my husband and I were DINKS (Dual Income No Kids, if you didn't know the lingo), Starbucks was part of my regular work routine. Tall latte, pumpkin scone. I'd fork over four bucks + change and happily be on my way. The old days had some serious perks. These days, my work uniform involves yoga pants (workout optional) and hooded sweatshirts (kid stains probable). Any coffee shop that doesn't have a drive-thru option is dead to me. Now I can make a good cup of coffee without setting foot outside my house. But man, it was hard to quit those pumpkin scones (which is unfortunate, as Keep Reading
Soft Pumpkin Cookies with Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting (recipe)
I had never even heard of pumpkin cookies until a few years ago. I was at a friend's house, when she casually asked if I wanted to try some cookies she had just made. Wait, pumpkin cookies? That's seriously a thing? Where have I been? After eating a socially unacceptable amount, I was in love. The following week another friend brought a big platter of frosted pumpkin cookies to our mom's group. They were equally delicious. Suddenly, I was feeling like everyone was in on this great secret but me. Good thing she brought me the recipe the following week. Now I'm in the club! If you haven't joined yet, this is your chance. Trust me, these cookies are Keep Reading
10 Cookbooks to inspire you in the kitchen (perfect gifts for the cook on your list!)
While much of my cooking these days is done with my laptop on the counter instead of a cookbook, I will always prefer the paper copy over any electronic option. The weight of the book, the feel of the pages, the look of the pictures. These things can't be replicated on a screen, in my old fashioned opinion. At any given time, I have one cookbook on my nightstand, another on the coffee table, a few on my library hold list, and a stack in the kitchen. I buy most of my books from Amazon (or just add them to my wish list and let others buy them for me) because the prices are consistently lower than most bookstores. So, in no particular order, here Keep Reading
Meat Loaf with Barbecue Sauce (the ultimate comfort food)
Meatloaf with Homemade BBQ Sauce When fall settles in to stay, with its foggy mornings, crisp days, and drippy nights, the first thing I think about, naturally, is food. That, and the fact that maybe this is the year to finally purchase an umbrella. Anyway, back to the food. Comfort food, to be exact, which is the perfect label for it. There's something seriously comforting in a steamy pot of soup or melty bowl of mac and cheese. The comfort food at the very top of my list, though, is definitely humble meat loaf. It was always the meal I most missed when away at college, and the one I first requested when home on breaks. It is still the first thing Keep Reading
Pumpkin Streusel Bread (a low fat, low sugar recipe)
Pumpkin Streusel Bread (recipe) You know something is not right when you are considering buying things online just so the mailman has to deliver packages to your door. Human interaction! Tell me about the outside world! And that's really saying something because my mailman is grumpy and grunty. But desperate times call for desperate measures. With some exciting exceptions (the bank! grocery store!), I have been trapped inside my home with four young children + one large stomach flu + two small colds for longer than recommended by the Board of Mental Health and Well Being. It hasn't been pretty, folks. This is coming from a total homebody, but there Keep Reading
4 Ways to Preserve Fall Leaves (decorate your home for fall for less!)
4 Ways to Preserve Fall Leaves When it comes to seasonal decorating, I'm a big fan of frugal + natural. I love bringing the outside in, and fall--winter is the perfect time to do it. Leaves, pumpkins, acorns, Indian corn, branches, pine cones. So much good stuff! You could peel "Made in China" stickers off plastic fruit or buy foam pumpkins. They sell pine cones at the craft store or you could drop $49 at West Elm for a... branch (90% of design bloggers have). But why not grab a bag of pears in the produce section or buy pumpkins at the local farmers market? Go for a walk and find cool stuff on the ground! As a special deal for all FLNW readers, Keep Reading
Chocolate pudding cake recipe
Chocolate Pudding Cake (recipe) If I had a quarter for every time my husband has requested this Chocolate Pudding Cake, I could hire a personal chef to make it for him. I might have enough left over to take a little vacation. Maybe wallpaper the bathroom in twenty dollar bills? I could... okay, you get the idea. He loves this cake. And I love him, so I make it. A lot. I must admit, the man has good taste. Chocolate Pudding Cake is pretty incredible. The cooking method for this cake is kind of unusual. You spread the chocolate cake batter into the baking dish before sprinkling the top with a combination of brown sugar and unsweetened cocoa. Keep Reading
