Menu Plan by Brittany Confession: I have never spent any amount of time preparing a freezer meal. Gasp. I know. I just can't handle the thought of spending hours in the kitchen with ingredients strewn all over the place. I'm as good with long hours in the kitchen as I am with large amounts of laundry. Enter the humble soup. What do I love about soup? I can make at least two meals out of each recipe. Soup freezes better than any other meal, in my opinion. Every time I make soup I get a meal now and a meal later. Problem solved. While we are giving soup a high five, I'd like to add that it is so much easier to get your kids to eat large amounts of Keep Reading
What’s for dinner? This week’s gluten-free, dairy-free menu plan (12/2)
Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free Menu Plan Menu Plan by Laurie Our two-year old is experiencing some (more) food intolerance issues, and we are taking a homeopathic approach to dealing with it (under the care of a physician). When one is a two year old boy, there is really no reasoning with him that what he has to eat is different than what the rest of us can eat. Therefore our family is now not only Gluten Free, but also Dairy Free and Cranberry Free (weird, I know) until close to the end of the year. I choose to view this as a fun challenge, rather than so much of a bummer. It's amazing what can be done without dairy or gluten these days! And don't Keep Reading
What’s for dinner? This week’s menu plan (11/18)
Menu Plan by our reader, Leslie, who blogs at Simply Music Wise about music, leaving a legacy, and living a well-rounded life with her children and students in Arlington, Washington. Howdy! I'm a Texan living in the northwest and believe me, my blood is thin. I love soup year round because of that, but my family only likes it during the winter months. Hurrah for cold weather. Soup everyday! If my natives get tired of soup, I freeze the leftovers for quick lunches. I've been a meal planner before it was cool. Here is my strategy: with 7 people in our family, each member takes 1 night of the week to choose their meal. That way they 'own' their Keep Reading

What’s for dinner? This week’s vegetarian menu plan (11/4)
I was so proud of myself last week. I stuck with my menu plan from Monday - Sunday! I can't even remember the last time that happened. Mine usually fall apart around Friday. Plans change or I forget to pick up some ingredients or we get a better offer for dinner. I am still convinced on the merits of making a menu plan every week. With four small kids in our home right now, life just runs so much more smoothly when I have a plan for dinner ahead of time. Here's hoping we have another good run this week! Here's what's for dinner at my house this week: Monday -- Creamy Spinach & Mushroom Lasagna, No-Knead Bread, green salads Tuesday -- Keep Reading

I am having a hard time wrapping my brain around the fact that we'll be into November by the end of this week. Crazy! I think the long stretch of October sun threw me off. I'm actually thrilled to have the rain back and looking forward to cozy fall days. I'm planning to dust off my Crock Pot for 2 meals this week. Every time I use it, which is rare, I wonder why I don't pull it out more. I would love to hear your favorite slow cooker recipes! Leave a comment with your link. Here's what's for dinner at my house this week: Monday -- Slow Cooker Beef Stroganoff, No-Knead Bread, green salad Tuesday -- Leftovers Wednesday -- Breakfast for Dinner: Keep Reading
Growing Garlic — It’s time to plant!
This post was originally published on September 21, 2010. There are a number of cool weather crops, like kale or cauliflower, that grow during our normally mild Pacific Northwest winters (more cool season planting ideas), but my heart belongs to garlic. You plant it in early fall (September/October), harvest it in mid-summer (July), and do very little in between. If you are looking to ease into this green thumb stuff, garlic is a great way to do it. I planted mine this week. If you are interested in growing your own, here are a few simple steps & tips: :: Buy full heads of garlic. I have heard that you want to buy local garlic so you Keep Reading
