Springwater Corridor: Sellwood to OMSI (SE Portland) My kids don’t seem to grasp the notion that they are only allowed to get cabin fever in the summer, when there’s no end of opportunities to work out the wiggles on playgrounds, in parks and at the pool. Fortunately, they love to ride bikes, but our neighborhood street isn’t the sort of place I really want them to go for a spin, so I’m glad we’ve discovered a protected bike path that makes an easy half-day adventure for our little family on any decent day, even in mid-winter. The Springwater Corridor is part of a massive loop of bike paths circumnavigating the eastern half of the Portland Keep Reading
FREE Valentine’s Day Printable: No Candy Flashlight Valentine
A few years ago my daughter came home from school absolutely adamant that we needed to find something cool to give her friend for Valentine's Day that didn't include sugar. Her friend has Type 1 Diabetes and couldn't eat buckets full of candy like the other kids at school could. Since then, I've become aware that there are tons of kids with food allergies and other health conditions that need to be careful about what they eat. And no parent of a child, food allergy or not, is thrilled about sending their kids to school and having them sent home with what amounts to a cavity in a bag. So I've made it my goal to find (and create) some awesome Keep Reading

Portland Family Fun Guide: Historic Belmont Firehouse
Historic Belmont Firehouse (SE Portland) On a rainy Saturday in January, my husband and I took our five and two year old to a little known historical firehouse in the Belmont neighborhood of SE Portland. On "Safety Saturday," held the second Saturday of each month, families can tour the Safety Learning Center and Fire Museum at no charge. Our kids were welcomed by City of Portland firefighters and given junior firefighter stickers to proudly wear while exploring the museum. The adults enjoyed the history of the firehouse including firefighting equipment from the 1800's, horse footprints left over from the horse drawn fire engines and an old Keep Reading

Portland Family Fun Guide: McDonald Forest
McDonald Forest (Corvallis area) Saturdays are for family adventures at our house. One of the things my family and I love to do is to find awesome hiking places that are great for little ones. When we happened upon McDonald Forest we were thrilled. McDonald Forest is an OSU research forest located west of Highway 99 and is 6 miles north of Corvallis. With 11,250 acres, most of which are forested, you are sure to feel like you are on your own adventure away from the city. We asked another hiker which way would be the best choice for our crew and headed off down the “William A Davies Road.” This wide path was a great option for us Keep Reading
