Over two years ago, I decided to jump on the “let’s start dressing like a big girl” and started ordering Stitch Fix boxes.
I loved the experience of the entire thing — getting a surprise box of loveliness in the mail curated just for me.
What is Stitch Fix?
Stitch Fix is a personal online styling service. You get your own stylist that shops for you and sends five items of clothing and/or accessories either monthly or on a date of your choosing.
Once you receive your box, you have three days to try everything on and decide what you want to keep and what you want to send back (shipping is free both ways).
If you purchase all five items, you get a 25% discount on the entire box. You are charged a $20 styling fee that is applied to any purchase you make from that box. If you send all five items back, you’re out the $20 fee.
After a couple of boxes, I pushed pause because I took the life-altering online fashion course, Adore Your Wardrobe. I realized that I needed to really learn how to dress for my body type and only wear clothing that looks amazing on ME, not some random waif of a model.
What is Adore Your Wardrobe?
Adore Your Wardrobe is a 30-day “video eCourse” that teaches the science and math, formulas and rules behind creating an amazing looking silhouette on your individual body. It will transform the way you think about clothes and how you put outfits together.
Registration for this course opens in September!
I worked hard to apply the principles taught in Adore Your Wardrobe to build a closet with select pieces that create balance (not Zen balance, but balance in that one part of my body doesn’t look out of proportion) and make me look amazing, regardless if I’m at my goal weight or packing a few extra emotional pounds.
And I’ve been killing it in the pants and skirts department, but I’m having troubs finding tops that fit me well and don’t look like a freaking potato sack (the current fashion trend = freaking potato sacks). So I decided to give my Stitch Fix stylist another try to see if she could send me five (Adore Your Wardrobe) rule-following tops that fit my lifestyle and style.
Here’s what I received in my August 2017 Stitch Fix box:
And my apologies, I lost the paper that listed all the prices. All these tops landed in the $45-$65 zone. I think the ones I kept were $45-$55.
Papermoon Anica Knit Top
I love, love, love this top. It’s fitted and totally my style. The only thing not working is the length (way too long for a pear shaped lady) and it has a curved hem. I folded the part that I will have hemmed by a tailor and it’s just right!
I kept this top.
Also wearing:
Jeans: Wit & Wisdom Ab-solution Itty Bitty Bootcut Jeans (Nordstrom) — I’m wearing a 6 petite. Size down. Also comes in plus sizes.
Shoes: VISCATA Escala Soft Ankle-Tie 2.5″ Wedges (Amazon) — These wedges are everything. I have wide feet and these fit wonderfully. Amazon has TONS of colors, patterns, and textures. I have the “Ash” color.
Papermoon Maula Cap Sleeve Knit Top
I like parts of this top, particularly the pattern, the texture of the fabric, the v-neck, and how it follows my pear-shaped silhouette. But it’s way too long and the shoulders are too big for my frame. I have fairly petite shoulders and either have to do a straight tank or a cap sleeve, not this in between business.
Fixing the flaws would cost too much money, so I sent this top back.
Also wearing:
Pants: Loft Curvy Kick Crop Flare Jeans — I’m wearing a 6 regular and honestly, they shrunk and are too short for me now. Oh well, I’m enduring until I can start over on ankle pants next year.
Shoes: Lucky Brand Emmie Flats — These flats are really, really comfortable, as in, I can wear them most of the day without wanting to gouge my eyes out. They also come in wide width (hallelujah!). They run true-to-size. I think I’m wearing “Bourbon” and I also have “Pewter.”
You can order them directly from Lucky Brand or Amazon.
Papermoon Marisol Mixed Material Knit Top
Well, this top was comfortable and I do love navy with white polka dots, but other than that, it was a big dud. First off, it’s a really big medium and too big on me. Second, it’s way too long for my shape. Third, it’s like a box, showing none of my curves. Fourth, it looks like a maternity top on me.
I sent this top back.

41Hawthorn Ezide Textured Print Top
I liked this top a lot. Great color, good shape, fantastic texture on the front, and the hemline was near perfection for my body. But, it was a smidge too big in the chest. I often have this problem having a smaller bust in proportion to the rest of my body. In order for some tops to fit around the belly and especially my hips, the bust is baggy.
I could have the bust taken in fairly easily (meaning it wouldn’t cost a bunch of money) but I didn’t love it enough to lay down the extra cash.
I sent this top back.

Renee C Linscott Split Back Blouse
This top is pretty close to a home run for me. The tank style covers my bra, the pattern is super fun, it comes in at my natural waist, and the hemline is tolerable, which means I don’t have to do any tailoring to make it wearable immediately.
I kept this top.

Make sure you read my giant Stitch Fix review here. It fully explains how Stitch Fix works and the pros and cons of using this styling service.
One important thing I’m learning about Stitch Fix is that it’s not about getting five articles of clothing that you love with every box. It’s about the experience — the anticipation of the box arriving, trying on things you would probably never pick out yourself, and then putting your keepers into your wardrobe rotation.
Stitch Fix, from what I gather, doesn’t expect that every box will be a home run. They fully expect you to return stuff that you don’t love, that doesn’t fit right, or is more than your wallet can handle right now.
If you’re interested in trying this service out, head to Stitch Fix and create your account. You don’t have to order right now. I sat around for months before pulling the trigger!

I really like that you said that you aren’t supposed to or are expected to keep everything in your box. I have received 4-5 Stitch Fix deliveries. I never kept the entire shipment, even though it was pretty tempting with the additional discount. There were a couple of boxes where I returned everything. At that point, I decided to take a break from the service.
I agree with they are fun to anticipate and get. That geometric print top is great. Too bad the blue floral pattern didn’t work.
