5 Family Traditions to Start Today
Guest Post by Susan Heid Studies show that traditions are quite important to family happiness. In fact, family rituals encourage children's social development, boost feelings of family unity and help provide connection and predictability, which people--especially children--crave. What we do as a family are our traditions and help define who we are. It’s what makes your family different from another; what makes your family special. Traditions are an easy way to strengthen your family and create lasting memories. Don’t miss out on the benefits traditions can have in your family by waiting for a special occasion. What’s for dinner? This week’s menu plan (10/13)
Last week, Stomach Flu stopped by our house and stuck around way too long. Normally stinky, unexpected visitors would totally throw off our week. But last week one of our sanity savers was having a menu plan. I'm not kidding! Life got messy, but we still ate a real dinner every single night. There was something very reassuring about having a plan (and actually sticking with it). I'd highly recommend it (see why here). Here's what's for dinner at my house this week: Monday -- Quinoa Patties, Kale Salad, roasted sweet potatoes Tuesday -- Pita Bread with Hummus & Middle Eastern Vegetable Salad Wednesday -- Brown Rice & Black Beans, Keep Reading
Trader Joe’s: Seasonal pumpkin products & prices (available now!)
Trader Joe's: Pumpkin products & prices This is not a sponsored post, but it's no secret how much I adore Trader Joe's. Joe! You have my heart! Clearly, I spend too much time in the grocery store. Just when I think I could not love Trader Joe's more, fall arrives and with it so many great seasonal products, especially ones containing pumpkin. Word on the street is that pumpkin is the new bacon. Trader Joe's got the message. They offer everything from pumpkin baking mixes to cold cereal to frozen pies. Ravioli? Check. Bagels & cream cheese? Of course. Body lotion? Got you covered. I picked up several of the baking mixes for $2-3, as Keep Reading
What’s for dinner? This week’s menu plan (10/6)
I scrapped menu planning during the summer, and it worked great. Late nights, last minute plans, garden produce. Not having a plan just fits the way we live in the summertime. Once September arrived and school started, it's a different story. If I don't make a plan for dinner, I feel like I'm constantly scrambling at the last minute to pull something together. Meal times feel chaotic because they are often late. And then there's the whole grocery budget. When I don't regularly menu plan, I spend more on food because I am either running to the grocery store for a handful of ingredients or we are eating out more often. Menu planning just makes good Keep Reading
Frugal homemaking ideas for October
October arrives on Wednesday! I am looking forward to the rain and the slower pace of fall. Fall Produce My garden is starting to wind down. The tomatoes, cucumbers, and green beans are almost finished. My pepper and kale plants are still producing like crazy. In about two weeks, I'll plant garlic. For more information, check out this complete post, How to grow garlic. The kids have picked the pumpkins. We'll use the smaller ones to make Pumpkin Puree. I'll bring in the last of the butternut squash soon. This recipe for Butternut Squash Carbonara will move to the top of our menu plan. Apple season will peak in the next two weeks. Check Keep Reading
September: Produce in season for the Pacific Northwest
September: Produce in season for the Pacific NW September is such a crazy month. We have the hot temperatures and peak produce of summer + school starting and fall arriving. I have been canning and freezing as much as possible the past two weeks. I have finished 160 pounds of apples and 100 pounds of tomatoes. This week I'm going to tackle 50 pounds of peaches ripening on my table right now. For fruit, look for local melons, prunes, plums, late peaches, and early apples and pears. In the vegetable department kale, herbs, green beans, cucumbers, corn, tomatoes, zucchini, eggplant, potatoes, onions, and peppers are still producing like crazy right Keep Reading
