Homemade Chocolate Bark Looking for a simple holiday treat you could serve at a party or give as a gift without spending a ton of time or money? Look no further. Homemade chocolate bark is the perfect solution, other than the name, which leaves something to be desired. Here's the basic idea: melt chocolate and stick dried fruit and nuts on it. See? I told you it was simple. To melt the chocolate you don't need a single piece of special equipment. No double boilers or candy thermometers. If you own a microwave, you are in business. On Tuesday, I made three different combinations of chocolate bark during the last 20 minutes of my kids' naptime, Keep Reading
What’s for dinner? This week’s menu plan (12/8)
I am in a dinner rut. It always happens before the holidays. I just want to break off pieces of my kids' gingerbread houses and hand out candy canes. But the people have spoken. They want real food. So, in the interest of keeping the peace and joy in our home, here's what's for dinner at my house this week: Monday -- Dinner with friends Tuesday -- Best Chicken Enchiladas, green salads Wednesday -- Hamburgers with Homemade Buns, Crispy Cornmeal Sweet Potato Fries Thursday -- The Best Lentil Salad, Ever (I plan to feed the picky little people mac n cheese) Friday -- Breakfast for Dinner: Waffles, baked eggs, fresh fruit Saturday -- Meatball Keep Reading
Frugal Living NW December Guide: Our favorite holiday recipes and activities
Welcome to December! I promise I won't gush about how it's the most wonderful time of the year or slip in one single Elf line. But just know that I'm humming White Christmas as I type. Black Friday (week) ushers in a whirlwind of advertising and shopping. It is so easy to slip into Herd Mentality Spending. I wrote this exactly three years ago today, but I find I need to be reminded of it every single year. I am trying to wrap up my shopping as early as possible this month so I can focus on creating intentional space for special memories with my family instead. Here are some of our favorite holiday recipes and activities to hep you stay on a Keep Reading
What’s for dinner? This week’s vegetarian menu plan (11/10)
Eating a vegetable-based diet, or at least working in 1-2 meatless dinners a week, is a good way to add variety to your meals and cut your grocery budget. To read more, check out our post, Less Meat, More Vegetables. Our family has been spending time at Zenger Farms every week, so my kids are really excited about things like radishes and purple beans and kale. I'm all over that, especially since the only meat they really like comes in the shape of a hot dog. Here's what's for dinner at my house this week: Monday -- Leftover Soup (From Bob's Red Mill Black Bean Soup Mix. Even my picky kids loved it!) Tuesday -- Quinoa Patties, Roasted Sweet Keep Reading
Roasted delicata squash with pomegranate and pumpkin seeds (recipe)
Anytime I know somebody who loves something within a category they normally hate, I sit up straight and pay close attention. The person who hates romantic comedies but has Sleepless in Seattle at the top of their movie list, who hates pop music but is gushing about the new Taylor Swift song, who hates sports but has memorized every Blazer player stat. Rip City, Baby. Or, say, someone who normally hates squash but saw this picture in an old Sunset magazine, went out the next day, bought three delicata squash for the first time ever, made the recipe, and ate it immediately (while taking pictures, no less). To use the most tired phrase in the whole Keep Reading

What’s for dinner? This week’s menu plan (10/27)
Over the weekend, we watched a soccer game in the pouring rain, lost our power in the midst of howling wind, and did yard work in the bright sunshine. All in the span of a single day. Welcome to fall in the Pacific NW. It's such a moody season. My husband and I love it, especially those stormy days when we can stay home and crank up our wood stove (if the kids take long naps, it's just the icing on the cake). It makes me want to make and eat nothing but comfort food. So that's exactly what I'm going to do this week. Here's what's for dinner at my house: Monday -- Cream of Wild Mushroom Soup (simplified a bit), No-Knead Bread, green salad Tuesday Keep Reading
