Guest Menu Plan by Bethany Bethany Weathersby lives in Woodburn, Oregon, with the other 5 Ws. She's involved in her church and local homeschool group, enjoys reading and running, avoids crafts, and has a tendency to get crabby when things don't go as planned. The recipes linked in this post are from her blog, For the Love of Grub, which is basically an online file for great recipes she gets from other people. I got a screamin' deal on sweet potatoes, so I worked them into a couple dinners this week. Most of these dinners are simple to prepare, which makes them perfect for a busy week. Not that any of you would ever have a busy week. Keep Reading
The Conscious Consumer and Couponer
photo credit "I could never use coupons. My family doesn't eat that kind of food." You've heard this line before, right? You are trying to convince a friend on the merits of couponing, and they fire this well-rehearsed line back at you. I know it well. It's the excuse I used for several years before I finally decided to see what this coupon hype was all about. My couponing habits have changed over the years, but I have found that it really is possible to be a conscious consumer and couponer at the same time. One thing I have been thinking about quite a bit lately is our connection, or lack thereof, to the land. It bothers me that we are losing Keep Reading
What’s for dinner? This week’s menu plan (4/6)
Guest Menu Plan by Abby Abby is a proud Oregonian at heart (Hey, Sweet Home!) who now permanently resides in rural Mississippi (the local grocery store really is Piggly Wiggly). She loves hunting monsters with her kids, playing golf with her husband, and learning cool new slang from her high school students. Abby blogs at Winstead Wandering. My husband and I are teachers, and this time of year always seems especially crazy. Between chaperoning overnight trips and enduring end-of-the-year chaos (here in Mississippi, school gets out in May), "easy" is the number one criteria for a meal to make it onto our menu plan. We don't have any allergies Keep Reading

That delicious veggie is in season right now, so I worked it into two dinners in one week. I also set out to use up a stash of coconut milk that I'd bought several cans of when it was on sale. Here's what's Keep Reading

All About Eggs: How to decode egg carton labels
Understanding Egg Carton Labels Spring is here, so let's talk eggs! I love eggs, but they are probably the one item on my grocery list that give me the most trouble. Anyone else feel this way? For example, a dozen eggs may go on sale for 99¢. Great price! But I hate the thought of sick hens in cramped cages. I put them back on the shelf. Do I pay three times as much for the cage-free option? Or even more for the humanely raised eggs? What's better: local eggs labeled as natural or eggs trucked in from Ohio labeled as organic? Omega-3? Vegetarian feed? Ack! I barely resist the urge to crumple into a heap in front of the dairy Keep Reading
