Last weekend I was fighting a stubborn head cold that resisted everything I threw at it. I even suffered the indignities of the Neti Pot. As I was getting ready for bed one night, I looked into the mirror to see a strange hobo looking back at me: bright orange hunting cap, college scarf, fleece sweatshirt, old sweats, and ratty socks. All topped off with the strong scent of Unker's. Needless to say, it wasn't a good look. Even though we slipped into survival mode for five days, we all came out alive. Meals made it to the table without a single emergency run to the grocery store. Which got me thinking again about the importance of having a well Keep Reading
Baked ham & cheese sandwiches recipe
Baked Ham and Cheese Sandwiches Some recipes don't need much introduction. This would be one of those recipes. These soft, buttery ham-and-cheese sandwiches are crazy delicious and best eaten with your fingers and a stack of napkins. They are perfect for an appetizer, savory brunch item, or just a quick dinner. And man, they seriously couldn't be easier to make. Assemble some ham-and-cheese sandwiches in a large baking dish before brushing them with a butter-and-mustard sauce. This takes maybe 5 minutes? Let them sit for awhile before popping them in the oven. The bottoms will be buttery crisp, the insides cheesy hot, and the tops buttery Keep Reading

Chocolate Crinkle Cookies (recipe)
Chocolate Crinkle Cookies This cookie recipe is near and dear to my heart because it comes from my grandma's recipe box. I'm always amazed at the strong connection between taste and smell and memory. It seriously fascinates me; I had six tabs open in my browser at once reading about it. These vivid memories are connected to emotions more than information. They recall a feeling, time, or a location. So cool. The smell of a box of crayons takes me back to the first day of school. The taste of my mom's meatloaf reminds me of breaks home from college. One bite of these cookies and I am at my aunt's house on Christmas Eve, surrounded by warmth and Keep Reading
Homemade Gingerbread Cookies
Homemade Gingerbread Cookies Christmas is just days away, and I have been cranking out all kinds of holiday treats from my kitchen (in January I will be cranking out miles in the gym to pay for it). This year, I strategically waited until my Mother-in-law arrived in town because she washes dishes like nobody's business. This is a big deal because I don't have a dishwasher in my kitchen (and I love my MIL, of course). I will happily keep the house stocked with baked goods as long as I don't have to do the dishes afterward. It's a nice trade-off, if you ask me. This is one of my favorite roll & cut Christmas cookie recipes. When I say roll Keep Reading
How to decorate for Christmas using simple, inexpensive items
Last weekend, I packed up all of my fall decorations. Into the box went acorns, pinecones, dried corn, and pressed leaves. Just call me Fancy Pants. Or not. I definitely prefer natural and simple decorations in my home. The items are easy to gather, the look is relaxed, and the expense stays low. I can appreciate an elaborately decorated home, but I don't want to live in it. And it would be much harder for me to let my kids explore and enjoy the season without worrying about that priceless antique vase. It really is possible to achieve a warm, welcoming home, even one that changes with the seasons, without breaking the bank. Half of these Keep Reading
