Safeway shopping trip with $10/$50 coupon
Here is another great trip to Safeway using Just4U prices, coupons and the $10/$50 coupon found on the back of the Oregonian’s Wednesday FoodDay section. Also, don’t forget about the 60 BoxTops you can earn by purchasing 10 participating products. Apparently I purchased twenty of them!
Plus, check out what reader Kati was able to score for $38.52. Nice job Kati!
If you are new to couponing and these transactions seem a bit overwhelming, start small by picking out a couple deals at Safeway this week. You can get Yoplait Go-Gurts and Barilla gluten-free pasta for only $1 each. Check out this week’s match-ups here.
Safeway doubles most manufacturer’s coupons to to $.50 each in Oregon and SW Washington.

Just got back from a frustrating trip from Sherwood Safeway! I laid all my coupons out on the counter along with my $10 off $50 (mistake #1), she discounted my MC’s first, by her choice, so brought it down to $47.92, so had to buy 2 packs of gum to get it back over $50, I told her I thought discount applied before MC’s taken off, she said no, and then due to buying my husbands non-alcoholic beer, it wouldn’t take the $10 off! I told her it was N/A, she said it didn’t matter. But no where on the coupon does it say that. Did not feel like taking it up with the manager on duty, as the place was a zoo and people were lined up everywhere.
So are the checkers used to people pulling out their MC’s after the $10 off comes off? Are they OK with that? I usually have good luck at my Safeway, a lot of times they will do the $10 off first then MC’s, so trying to find out their coupon policy and go back in tomorrow to talk to mgr. So needless to say I walked out paying full price for $50.92 worth of groceries, without my $10 discount, Bummer!
Ideas, feedback? Return all my groceries tomorrow? Ha! :}

That is a bummer!
Did the cashier just flat out refuse to scan the $10 coupon? In my experience it doesn’t matter when the cashier scans the $10 coupon, before or after manufacturer coupons are applied it still comes off if I have the total over $50 after store sales, store coupons and the doubl’r. I’ve had plenty of them tell me that the register won’t take it but it always does if you can convince them to actually scan it.
I’m not sure abut the beer issue, but it should work like the liquid dairy products that are excluded. As long as your total is over $50 excluding the beer you should have been able to use your $10 coupon in the same transaction.
If you have had good experiences before at this location, I would encourage you to go back and talk to the manager. Ask them directly about the issues you had and see what their response is. If nothing else it will be a good indicator of how they respond to couponers. Every location is different, some are great with couponers…others are horrible. I drive past a couple of Safeway’s to get to my favorite one because it’s worth it to me to be treated nicely. They have gotten to know me there and it is much easier to work out issues as they arise.

I am new to using coupons and I do not understand the $10/$50. I assume it is $10 off when you spend $50 but it looks like people are paying much less than $40? How does that work?
Kate from Frugal Living NW says
Hi Michelle! Welcome. The $10 off $50 is your total before coupons. You give the cashier that coupon first once your total is over $50. Then they deduct the coupons you have for your products. That is how the total gets so low. Check out the Ultimate Guide to Couponing for more tips — http://www.frugallivingnw.com/theultimateguide/

Great week at Safeway. Will have to go back and get some spaghetti sauce.
So far spent about $6 for apples, grapes, 4 pillsbury crossaints, 4 nature valley granola bars, 3 Keebler multi pack snack crackers, 2 cream cheeses, 4 cans of soup

Since my printer is broken and I don’t buy the newspaper I did that using only coupons found on Safeways website or CAT’s I found lieing around my house from prior purchases. If you had the high value coupons others could save even more than I did!
