Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and you know what that means. No, not Black Friday. I’m talking about turkey!
I am probably the wrong person to be writing this post. My sisters and I decided to cook a non-traditional Thanksgiving feast this year, swapping out all the old favorites with new dishes. We got together last week with a stack of cooking magazines and books, creating a menu that would make your mouth water. It should be a fun experiment. That is, if the guys don’t revolt on us when they hear we are roasting brussel sprouts instead of making stuffing and serving pear pie instead of the standard pumpkin. Even though we’re giving turkey the ax (get it?), we’re hoping to keep the boys happy with beef instead.
Actually, it’s kind of funny we think of turkey as traditional because turkey probably did not even make an appearance at the first Thanksgiving “feast.” The food we now eat on Thanksgiving is closer to the way it was celebrated in the late 1800’s. The pilgrims were probably eating roasted or boiled venison, fish, lobster, eels, and/or ducks for the main course. Yum. (Go here to read more.)
Anyway, enough historical trivia. On to the turkey.
For those of you celebrating Thanksgiving with a plump turkey in the middle of the table, here are a few price points in the Portland area to help you get the most bird for your buck. I’ll update this list next week if prices change as we get closer to Thanksgiving.

most adds say with a $50 purchase. So if I spend $50 can I get the two different brands of turkeys one each or do I need to spend $100?

I know I’m coming in late on this, but I just saw this post. 😛
We got in on the local Safeway deal of .29/lb with $25 purchase and got our 18# turkey for about five and a half bucks. 🙂
Also, at Saar’s Market Place http://www.marketplacefood.com/ they have a deal every year (so far!) where you get several items plus a 10-12# turkey or 4# Black Forest ham for $14.99. We always take the time to weigh up what look like the largest turkeys in the designated bin, and this year we came away with a 14# turkey …plus the olives, can of veggies, can of cranberry sauce, box of stove top stuffing, envelope of gravy and five pound bag of potatoes.
In previous years it was a turkey AND a ham plus the other things for $19.99…I think I like this deal just fine though. They usually run their holiday meal deal from before Thanksgiving through the New Year holiday, and we try to budget one in every payday. Because turkey is NOT just for Thanksgiving at our house! 🙂

Thanks for the round up of prices, great idea. I do Albertsons match ups and somehow missed that price, that is how I bought my turkey last year, with a minimum purchase. Just bought all my other mostly non-couponing needs (produce and such) to get up to $25.
We always have turkey, it is the one time of year we eat it and I LOVE dark meat turkey, yum! One year when I was little, my Grandpa asked me if I had any special requests and I chose fried chicken. That is what we had instead of turkey, I’m sure all the adults were super happy.. 🙂

Emily, I’m curious what you are going to serve! I hope you will update us with a post on one of the blogs!

Has anyone seen a minimally processed frozen turkey? The saline solution that has been injected ( “plumping”??) in all the birds I have seen makes no sense when my DH and I are both taking blood pressure meds.

Standard turkey goodness for us. Props to you for switching it out, I’d have an all out revolt on my hands if I did that. Already pre-ordered my turkey and a small ham from New Seasons. Happy Thanksgiving!

We go out! It’s so nice to not have to worry about cooking/cleaning up and I can spend the whole afternoon planning my black friday shopping!
