I feel like I blinked and all the sudden the leaves are off the trees, the temperatures have dropped, and the holidays are here. October and November just disappeared. Is this what happens when you get older? I have no memory. I do have plans, though, so here we go.
I am finally getting around to roasting and pureeing my poor neglected pumpkins. The lazy part of me wants to let them sit on the porch until they turn into mushy orange blobs that will get scooped into the compost pile. The frugal homemaker in me can’t let that happen. I will lose sleep until they are converted into bags of frozen pumpkin goodness that will turn into scones and pancakes and cookies in the months ahead. Check out Kate’s post for a great list of 26 different pumpkin recipes!
I always follow Pioneer Woman’s steps for making Homemade Pumpkin Puree. While you’re over there, check out her Favorite Thanksgiving Side Dishes. I realize most of you already have your menus planned or consumed by now, but just humor me anyway. Seriously? I want to eat my computer screen just looking at those pictures.
And for those of you interested in saving and planting your seeds next year, head over to One Hundred Dollars a Month, where Mavis talks about How to Save Pumpkin and Squash Seeds. According to the comments, you could run into some issues depending on whether the plant was a hybrid or an heirloom. My husband and I have a large slope to our lot that I want to cover with pumpkin plants next year. I’m not picky about variety so I plan to try this and just see what comes up.
Planning to join the craziness of Black Friday? Not me. Which is what I say every single year. Translation: Me too! I can’t help it. Whether you join the sleep-deprived masses on Friday (or Thursday night?), we all shop and spend more over the course of the next month. Read Herd Mentality Spending to think through how you will stay on track with your spending this holiday season.
Now back to your regularly scheduled turkey.
