Dollar Tree is the store where EVERYTHING is a dollar. I love this store. My kids think it is great to take a dollar and buy a ninja mask, police officer kit or a bag of those little green army men. I, on the other hand, actually purchase items that won’t end up in the Goodwill pile next week!
Yet, not everything is a great deal for $1. Here are a few tips to consider when shopping at Dollar Tree.
1. Look for name brand items you can match with a coupon.
Barilla Pasta (1 lb) $1
*Oftentimes the Sunday paper gets $1/2 coupons.
Softsoap Hand Liquid Soap (8 oz) $1
Use $.35/1 coupon from 1/19 SS insert
$.65 after coupon
Reach Floss (55 yd) $1
*Anytime a $1/2 printable shows up for Reach Floss, we post it!
2. Some name brand items are a great price without a coupon.
Hunts Ketchup (24 oz) $1
Kraft Recipe Makers $1
Yardley Soap $1
*These smell wonderful and would make a great little thank-you for a teacher.
Michelina’s Frozen Entrees $1
3. Birthday supplies are a must buy at Dollar Tree.
Gift Bags $1
Cards $.50
4. Books, coloring books, and activity books are a steal at a dollar
Novel Books $1
Activity Books $1
5. Items priced much higher at Walmart or Target
Pregnancy Tests $1
Kids’ Hair Accessories $1
Every Dollar Tree does not carry the exact same items. Here is what I was able to get on my trip this week for only $4.75!
Now it’s your turn. What items do you get at Dollar Tree on a regular basis?

Mylar balloons, movie box candy, brown lunch bags, baggies, saran wrap, foil, wax paper, napkins, paper towels, bar soap, qtips, bandaids, Dayquil/nightquil pills, tampons, pantyliners, maxi pads, packing tape, birthday paper/bags, scotch tape, and my greatest find is veggie sticks!
Howard says
The Scrub Buddies soap pads (or “Tampons” as they are labeled en francais on the back of the box) are pretty good- 10 for $1. I used to load up on the RA pads when they’d go on sale for $.99, but that ended some time ago.

The balloons make for a cute decoration/party favor at kiddo’s birthday party-my cousin always does it.
Heidi says
Antibiotic ointment. Works great and much cheaper than Neosporin.

woodburn has the sunday paper but it sells out fast

I buy my bath scrubbies, my dish scrubbies, and those crystal light packets there. I’m going to keep an eye out for soap.

Just picked up free toothbrushes using the $1/1 Reach coupon from a week or so ago.

I agree about buying all of this except for ONE THING: pregnancy tests. I would want to make SURE my test worked (either way!). In this case, I think it’s better to pay a bit more for the brand name tests. 🙂

Pregnancy test from the dollar tree are the same as the expensive brand name ones… My OB even told me that.. The test are based on your hormone levels and even the cheapest of test are most likely accurate… Hope this helps ease your mind.

I used to feel the same way until a few years ago when this same topic came up here and I saw how many women used them and received accurate results. I gave them it a try in March 2012 and I have the proof that they work sitting in my lap right now 🙂

I’m keeping my dollar in my wallet. I can predict with certainty that I won’t be ovulating anytime soon.

I have taken a dollar tree pregnancy test and gotten a correct result all five times I have been pregnant and a few times (probably at least ten) gotten a correct negative result. The first one I took was at a pregnancy center in my town when I found out I was pregnant with my oldest. After I realized they were the exact same as at Dollar Tree I just went there from then on 🙂

The name brand aren’t any different-it’s a chemical reaction based on a hormone in your urine-no fancy packaging or brand name alters what it does. I’ve seen posts from people who are lab techs for medical clinics vouching for their accuracy. (I actually used the even cheaper ones off amazon, and got a positive before I was even 4 weeks pregnant!)
Better to save the money to spend on diapers and cute clothes

Melissa D’Arabia on Food Network said that sometimes she buys spices at the Dollar Tree. I found a huge bag of cinnamon sticks for $1 (after having bought 3 packages at Target to get the same amount of sticks, but for about $8/package.)
Twin Mom says
Mylar balloons for birthdays, “disposable” sippy cups, manilla and regular envelopes and any “emergency stationery item” are on my list. (Emergency stationery means your husband forgot what he needed for Sunday School and you need it fast and, ideally, cheap.)
Heidi Snider says
That is BY FAR the most organized Dollar Tree I have ever seen! All the ones in my area are perpetually in a state of chaos.
chris says
I buy glow sticks and beach and camping toys before each camping trip. For $10 I can have new items to pull out each night to entertain the kids, and I don’t have to worry about their “good” toys being lost or broken.
Also the balloons are a great deal. Sometimes I give balloons as a gift – to the people that already have most everything. 🙂

I buy the foil pans for making freezer meals.
Bethany says
I get the sunday paper for $1.00 rather than $2.00 elsewhere.
Denise says
Bethany, I did not know that they had the Sunday paper there! I’m going to have to check my dollar tree.
I buy bath puffies, night time pain reliever, and Awesome, the best all purpose cleaner I’ve ever found.

I believe it is only Washington that has papers at their stores. I know the Portland area (the ones I have been to anyway) do not have them. but I have gotten them in the Tacoma area.
These are the only two states I know anything about.

I thought you also were an expert on the state of confusion. Looks like no shopping for me till at least Monday; have not left the house since I got home around noon on Thurs.
